Our History

The Success was founded in 1901 by R.L. Carrothers under the name of The Eldorado Paper. He printed his first edition with a hand-turned Washington press on December 6, 1901. The newspaper's original office was located on the 200 block of SW Main Street, just a few feet from where the newspaper is published today.

Carrothers ran the newspaper for only a few years before selling it to Schleicher County pioneer A.T. "Archie" Wright, who promptly changed the name to The Eldorado Success. Wright's family published The Success well into the 1930s.

Fred Gunstead purchased The Success in 1946 after it had gone through a series of owners. The Gunstead family owned and published The Success until 1976 when he sold it to Ed Meador.

The newspaper again went through a series of owners until it was purchased in 1994 by Randy and Kathy Mankin. They formed Masked Rider Publishing, Inc. that same year, and have published The Eldorado Success under that corporate banner ever since.

The Eldorado Success remains today as the oldest continually operated business in Eldorado and Schleicher County, Texas.

In recent years, The Success has received numerous awards and accolades and is widely recognized as one of the best small town newspapers in Texas.

The Eldorado Success is a proud member of the West Texas Press Association (WTPA), Texas Press Association (TPA), and the National Newspaper Association (NNA).

Success publisher Randy Mankin is a past WTPA president a long-time member of the TPA board of directors. He currently serves as the TPA First Vice President.

In 2005, the Eldorado Success gained a sister publication when The Big Lake Wildcat joined the Masked Rider Publishing family.
