Lady Eagles improve to 3-0 in District

By Coach Jayson Wilhem
The Lady Eagles continued their great defensive play and hot hitting in Miles on Friday, March 23, where they got a 13-2 win. The Lady Bulldogs finished last season as the district runner-up and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.
Eldorado started off the game a little stronger than their past few by scoring four runs in the first. Miles managed only one hit in its half of the first inning. Kiarra Trevino was once again in the circle for the Lady Eagles.
The second inning began with Trevino getting hit by a Miles’ pitch. That was followed by a walk to Miranda Arispe. Miles recorded the first out of the inning on a base running error by the Lady Eagles. An infield hit by Mary Lou Martinez and an error by the Lady Bulldogs allowed Trevino to score the only run for Eldorado in the second. A hit and an error by Arispe allowed Miles to put a runner in scoring position. The next batter singled the runner home and it was 5-1 Eldorado after two innings. Kasey Gonzalez and Melissa Gonzales each walked to start the third. Macy Mikeska hit a fly ball deep to leftfield that was caught. A single by Abby Fuentes scored Kasey Gonzalez and Melissa Gonzales. Arispe then hit a line drive that scored Fuentes. Arispe moved to second on a throwing error by the Lady Bulldogs. Trevino struck out for the second out of the inning. Marissa Gonzales reached first and moved Arispe to third on a hit, but that would be as far as they would go. Mary Lou Martinez popped up to shortstop to end the threat.
Miles went three and out as the Lady Eagle defense tightened up. Brianna Gamez led off the fourth with a walk and scored one batter later as Melissa Gonzales hit one to right centerfield. A strikeout and two ground outs ended the inning with Gonzales on third. Again, Miles sent three batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth. The first batter singled and the second batter hit a line drive to Arispe which was caught. Arispe threw to Mary Lou Martinez at first to complete the line out, throw out double play. Brianna Gamez caught a fly ball in centerfield for the third out of the inning. The Lady Eagles managed one run in the fifth thanks to hitting by Mary Lou Martinez and Kasey Gonzalez. One hit was all Miles was allowed in their half of the fifth as the Lady Eagles continued to play solid defense behind Trevino.
Through five innings Eldorado was leading 10-2. The mercy rule comes into effect anytime a team is leading by 10 or more runs after five innings and this is what the Lady Eagles were looking for. Three Lady Eagles crossed home in the sixth. Lisa Olivares scored on a triple by Trevino. Trevino was singled home by Arispe. Marissa Gonzales followed with a single. Mary Lou Martinez then hit a double allowing Arispe to score. On Martinez’s hit Gonzales was thrown out at home. Martinez made it all the way to third on a single by Gamez.
The inning ended on a Kasey Gonzalez groundout. Looking to prolong the contest, Miles picked up a single and a walk after two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kiarra Trevino struck out the next batter to end the contest in favor of the Lady Eagles 13-2.
The Lady Eagles go to Santa Anna on Thursday, March 29th and Menard plays here on Friday, March 30th at 5:00. These are the final 2 games of the first half of district play. Come out and support the Eldorado Lady Eagles as they look to move to 5-0 in district.

Trevino, Lady Eagles almost perfect in 17-0 win over Winters Lady Blizzards
by Coach Jayson Wilhelm
The Lady Eagle softball team traveled to Winters on Wednesday, March 21st, to make-up a District 2-1A game that was previously rained out.
Earlier, i n District 2-1A opener held on March 10, the Lady Eagles defeated TLCA, 28-8 with Senior Abby Fuentes pitching. So it was last week that the Lady Eagles were eager to get back on the diamond after Spring Break.
Eldorado started the contest in the batter’s box but went three and out. Kiarra Trevino then took to the circle in her first high school start. She wasted little time getting to work and, thanks to some timely defensive plays, she didn’t have to work for long.
Trevino struck out the first Lady Blizzard and two ground outs followed. The second inning was better for the Lady Eagles as Marissa Gonzales, Mary Lou Martinez, and Kasey Gonzalez all came across the plate. Trevino went back to work in the second. Winters managed two weakly hit balls that resulted in outs and Trevino sent the third batter back to the dugout with her second strikeout.
The Winters defense played well not allowing a Lady Eagle on the base path in the third. A ground out, another strikeout, and a pop out kept the Lady Eagles perfect through three.
The bats for the Lady Eagles seemed to wake up in the fourth inning. Marissa Gonzales and Mary Lou Martinez each scored again, and Brianna Gamez and Melissa Gonzales also scored. Winters’ half of the fourth brought more of the same. The leadoff hitter laid down what appeared to be a very good bunt, but flawless execution by the Lady Eagles resulted in the first out of the inning. The second batter became Trevino’s fourth strikeout victim and that was followed by a ground out to Miranda Arispe at shortstop.
In the top of the fifth inning the bats came alive for Eldorado as the Lady Eagles batted through the lineup twice and every player scored at least once, en route to a ten run inning. This gave Eldorado a seventeen run lead and enough to bring the mercy rule into effect.
Through four innings of play, not one Lady Blizzard had reached based. The first batter in the fifth struck out and the excitement started building. After working deep into the count, the second batter was able to manage a single into shallow centerfield just over the outstretched arm of Kasey Gonzalez. On the first pitch to the next batter, Kasey Gonzalez saw a line drive come right at her. She handled the shot and quickly threw to first to double up the runner. This ended the game and the Lady Eagles saw the minimum number of batters through five innings, fifteen up, fifteen down.
