Reverend James W. Andrews, 93, of San Angelo, died peacefully in his sleep on August 24, 2018, at his home while on hospice care for several months.

Born in Temple, TX on January 23, 1925, to Ray Q. and Ruth Elizabeth Andrews. James spent his early years on a dairy farm in Abilene. He married the love of his life, Mary Frances Mankin, in 1948 at Truby Baptist Church near Anson.

After a short career in route sales, James was called to the ministry in service of our Lord and Savior. He attended Hardin Simmons University, graduating in 1956 and Southwestern Baptist Seminary.

After pastoring several churches in West Texas, including Hebron, Tuxedo, Sweetwater, and New Deal, he spear-headed a bus ministry in Hobbs N.M., and then Mobile, AL before returning to West Texas where he served as an Assistant Pastor at First Baptist Church of San Angelo for 18 years. Continuing the bus ministry in San Angelo, he was instrumental in making sure several hundred children in San Angelo could attend church each week and hear God’s Word. Additionally, he served as pastor of Seniors and Missions. As a part of his ministry at First Baptist Church, James helped secure land for and plant several churches in the San Angelo area including PaulAnn Baptist Church, Dove Creek Baptist Church, Quail Valley Baptist Church, Northridge Baptist Church, Christian

Fellowship Church, and Glen Meadows Baptist Church. He also did mission work in Santa Elena and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. After retiring, James and Mary led the Fellowship Sunday School Class at Glen Meadows Baptist Church for several years.

He leaves his wife of 69 years, Mary Frances (Mankin), a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Diane Andrews of San Angelo; and a daughter and son-in-law, Sheri and Brent Rutledge of Uvalde; six grandchildren, Trevor (Abby) Andrews, Tambra Andrews, Aubry (Brad) Baldwin, Amanda (Erik) Montelongo, Garrison Rutledge, McCrae Rutledge; three great-granddaughters, Madison Andrews, Emma Cooper, and Amelia Andrews; a sister, Elizabeth Griffin, of Abilene, a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Verdell Andrews, of Fort Worth; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law from Mary’s family, Dora Mankin, Larry and Ramona Olney, Marilyn Grant, and Jerry Lynn and Carla Olney as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Floyd Andrews, and his wife Wilma, sister Dorothy Day and her husband Sam, as well as brothers and sisters-in-law Joe Thomas Mankin, R.W. Mankin, Betty Ruth Brown, James Mankin, L.C. and Dorothy Scales, James and Kari Best,and Allen Grant.

Special thanks is given to San Angelo Home Health, Hospice of San Angelo, the doctors, private caregivers, and friends that have helped James over the past several years.

The family requests memorials to Glen Meadows Baptist Church for Foreign Missions.

Visitation was Sunday and Monday, August 26th and 27th at Harper Funeral Home. Funeral service was held Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at Glen Meadows Baptist, followed by interment in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
