Walter Eugene “Gene” Fischer, 86, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2022. A graveside service was held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, August 14, 2022, at Willow Cemetery in Haskell, Texas. Services are under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes in Haskell.

Gene graduated from Rule High School in 1955. He married Anita Jo Humphrey on July 30, 1957. He served in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman in California, Florida, North Carolina, and Puerto Rico. He attended Draughon’s Business College in Abilene and diesel mechanic school in Detroit, MI. He began his love of farming in 1961, which included farms over multiple counties. Gene served as a deacon and church treasurer at Paint Creek Baptist Church for nearly 50 years. He also served on the Paint Creek School Board for 21 years, Stamford Electric Coop Board for 10 years, the Haskell Hospital Board, Paint Creek Water Supply Board, and Haskell Jones Coop Board. Recently, he worked with his son-in-law, David, at Creek Construction for 11 years in Eldorado and Sonora, TX, building new homes and sharing his knowledge of craftsmanship with others. Gene’s true passions were farming, family, and serving the Lord.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anita Fischer; three daughters, Gena Trice and husband John of Ft. Worth, Linda Ramsay and husband Peter of Rowlett, and Kay Creek and husband David of Abilene; seven grandchildren, Joshua Trice and Itzel, Jaqi Trice Garvin and Patrick, Craig Lowrance, Cole Lowrance, Kade Creek and Brianna, Brianah Coalson and Creed, and Michael Creek; five great grandchildren, Liam, Remi, and Emma Trice, Luke, and Logan Garvin; sister, Sharon Lusk of Haskell.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Birdie and Walter A. Fischer; and sister Sue Morris.
