By Randy Mankin My wife, Kathy, is a first generation American on her mother’s side of the family. Kathy’s mother Anne was born in Kyiv, Ukraine in 1934 and grew up during turbulent times. The family’s farm having been confiscated by the Russians following the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917-18, the Kirschbaum family eked out a meager living working, more or less, as slaves of the soviet state.
