BY MARK ZOELLER TEXAS A&M AGRILIFE Texas 4-H, part of one of the largest youth organizations in the nation, is once again getting ready to welcome new members as well as existing members through its annual enrollment process starting Aug. 15.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent a letter Monday to New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, inviting the mayors to visit Texas’ southern border to see the humanitarian crisis firsthand.

Schleicher County Commissioners met Monday, July 25th and voted to issue a disaster declaration due to the ongoing crisis on the southern border. The move came as many local jurisdictions, including Texas cities and counties, are doing the same. They say the federal government’s lack of control on the border has prompted an overwhelming influx of illegal immigrants that constitute a foreign invasion.

The Schleicher County Rodeo Association held its 53rd annual Top of the Divide Rodeo on Friday and Saturday, July 22nd & 23rd at the rodeo area south of town.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar is reminding shoppers they can save money on clothes and school supplies during the state’s sales tax holiday on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 5-7.

The Schleicher County Rodeo Association will entertain rodeo fans for the 53rd consecutive year as the Top of the Divide Rodeo returns to Eldorado on Friday and Saturday, July 22nd & 23rd at the rodeo area south of town. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate with children 12 and under being admitted for free.

Bob Buchholz of Eldorado received the Earwood Award during the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers’ 107th annual convention on Friday, July 15th in Kerrville. The award is the association’s most prestigious and coveted award.

Texas 4-H Youth Development Program announces Texas 4-H Congress was held in Austin at the State Capitol on July 17-20, 2022. Seth and Cade Parker from Eldorado attended the even and participated as delegates.

Texas A&M Forest Service opened the Austin Airtanker Base at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Saturday, July 15th, to assist with increased wildfire activity across the state.

Laura Mendez, 40, of Eldorado was arrested Monday, July 11, 2022, and booked into the Schleicher County Jail. She is charged with Forgery of a Financial Instrument, a third degree felony, in an amount greater than $30,000 but less than $150,000

It’s rodeo time again in Eldorado and three local girls are competing for rodeo queen

Schleicher County Medical Center and Schleicher County Family Clinic received notice recently from PFC USA, a company under contract to provide accounts receivable management services to the hospital and clinic, that some patient data may have been exposed as a result of a network security incident.

Schleicher County Commissioners held a public hearing on Monday, May 11th, regarding the creation of a 3,497-acre reinvestment zone in eastern Schleicher County. The hearing was necessary before the commissioners could consider granting a tax abatement to the 12 Mile Solar Project that is proposed near County Road 245.

Archie Nixon, a 1972 graduate of Eldorado High School, is slated to represent the United States at the World Archery 3-D Championship in Terni, Italy in September.

The 91st Mias Amigas Club reunion has come and gone with the Eldorado High School classes of 1972 and 2002 being honored as the 50 and 20 year classes, respectively.

Last Friday’s Supreme Court decision overturning the 49-year-old Roe vs. Wade decision sent political and cultural shock waves through the nation even though it should have been expected, especially after the leak of Justice Alito’s draft opinion just a few weeks ago.

BY DOROTHY DACY MIAS AMIGAS CLUB HISTORIAN The 91st annual meeting of the Mias Amigas Club is slated for Friday and Saturday, June 24-25, 2022. This will be the first time the club has met in person since 2019. Meetings were held remotely in 2020 and 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Schleicher County EMS is asking the county for more money in the 2023 budget. T.J. and Melissa Rodriguez were present for Monday morning’s commissioners court meeting on behalf of the EMS and to explain the service’s proposed budget.

The Eldorado City Council met Monday and voted to allow members of the EHS senior class of 2023 to paint and personalize their parking spaces at the school.
