Two fun-filled days of activity is planned for Eldorado this weekend with the 54th annual Top of the Divide Rodeo sharing center stage with the 92nd annual Mias Amigas Club meeting (see story below) and the annual Schleicher County Day Festival.

This week, we offer the fifth and final installment of our hanging tree series. We learn about the Halletsville Hanging Tree where a native American man was hanged after being convicted of shooting and killing a man in 1878. Then there is the Center Hanging Oak where, on separate occassions in the 1920s, two Black teenagers, neither of whom stood trial for their alleged crimes, were hanged by lynch mobs.

This week, we offer the fourth installment of our five-part series about the Lone Star State’s legendary hanging trees, including the Pioneer Oak in Athens and the Tombstone Oak in Uvalde.

The Texas Forest Service lists 10 hanging trees and features them on its website. They represent but a portion of the dozens of known hanging trees that once dotted the state. Most of those have died or have been destroyed, including an oak tree that stood in Jones County, alongside U.S. 277 between Anson and Hawley.

Michael Ballew took the oath of office and joined the Eldorado City Council on Monday, June, 12th after winning election on May 6th. He was joined by council member Oscar Martinez in bringing up the subject of local residents driving around town in golf carts.

Schleicher County was represented extremely well at the annual Texas State 4-H Roundup in College Station last week.

The Schleicher County Public Library (SCPL) has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the San Angelo Area Foundation to assist in the building renovations/equipment, furnishings, and security / technology equipment for the proposed new Public Library at the Eldorado Service Center (ESC).

Former Eldorado Elementary School music teacher, Joella Parker was presented a plaque in appreciation of her 44 years of service to Schleicher County ISD on behalf of the Eagle Band Boosters and SCISD at the Eldorado band spring concert on May 16.

The Eldorado-Divide Soil & Water Conservation District and the Natural Resources Conservation Service Field Office is proud to welcome Caitlyn McIntosh as the new District Conservationist.

Thirty-three Eldorado High School graduates received their diplomas on Friday evening, May 26th, at Larry Mitchell Stadium, as an audience of friends, family, and well-wishers looked on.
