The Texas Forest Service warns that wildfire activity is expected to gradually increase in the coming days, as critical fire weather occurs where very dry vegetation is present across West and South Texas, including here in Schleicher County.

Eldorado High School’s UIL Academics team is the district champion after winning the District 7-2A Meet on Saturday, March 26th with a total of 524.5 points. Christoval placed second with 333 points.

Reports have reached Eldorado that Frederick Merril Jessop, one-time overseer of the YFZ Ranch and presiding bishop of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, died on February 28th of this year, at his home near Cedar City, Utah. He was 86.

The designation of future Interstate 27 (I-27) became official on Tuesday, March 15 as President Biden signed into law the appropriation bill. The designation recognizes the Ports-to-Plains Corridor from Laredo, Texas to Raton, New Mexico as the intended route for the interstate highway.

Schleicher County Commissioners met Monday, March 21st and approved a request by County Clerk Mary Ann Gonzalez that will effectively abolish the office of County Election Administrator. U.S. Representative Tony Gonzales was in Eldorado on Thursday, March 10th where he held several meetings with local citizens. Among his stops here was an appearance at Southwest Texas Electric Cooperative where he visited with representatives of the cooperative as well as the local hospital district.

The Schleicher County ISD board of trustees met Wednesday, March 9, 2022, in a meeting that was called ahead of this week’s Spring Break.  The board handled several items of business, including approval of the BBB local policy that allows for the school district to convert from a board configuration consisting of five single-member district seats and two at-large seats to a scheme that has four single-member districts and three at-large seats.

Schleicher County Commissioners met Monday, March 7th, and voted to renew the countywide ban on outdoor fires that had expired on February 28th. With less than a three-quarters of an inch of rain received here since October, conditions across the county are exceedingly dry, elevating the potential for grass and brush fires and hastening the commissioners to renew the burn ban.

Rahegyn Franke and T.J. Rodriguez are still in a runoff for the Republican nomination for Justice of the Peace, but their final vote tallies changed a bit after a handful of mail-in ballots were received on Wednesday, March 2nd.

Rahegyn Franke will face T.J. Rodriguez in a runoff for the Republican nomination for Schleicher County Justice of the Peace. Four candidates sought the nomination and none of them were able to exceed the 50% mark that would have prevented a runoff. Franke received 193 votes while Rodriguez garnered 184. The two of them will have to try again in the May 24th runoff.

Southwest Texas Electric Cooperative Youth Coordinator Neil Cooper is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 Government-in-Action Youth Tour Essay Competition. They are Katelyn Gamez of Eldorado High School and Jazmin Rodriguez of Reagan County High School.

Southwest Texas Electric Cooperative recently announced the purchase of the 14.6 acre Baker-Hughes yard located approximately three miles south of Eldorado. The complex, which had been used for oilfield cementing and acidizing operations since the 1970’s, has an extensive array of buildings and structures.

Twelve members of the Mighty Eagle Band performed at the Region 6 UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest on Saturday, February 19th at Wylie High School. All of the students received a Division 1 rating from the judges.

Eldorado was represented very well at the San Angelo Ewe Lamb Futurity that was held Sunday, February 20, 2022. Eleven students participated and all eleven placed.

Plantible Foods, a San Diego, California company, is planning to grow and harvest lemna at a site some four miles south of Eldorado. Lemna is a member of the duckweed family. The bright green-colored aquatic plant is high in protein and could have Eldorado going green in an entirely new way.

The Schleicher County Hospital District board of trustees met Monday evening, February 14, 2022 and voted to extend the contracts of the district’s three campus principals, Perry Graves (EHS), Ezra Walling (EMS) and Michael Rudewick (EES).

Former Eldorado High School band director Mike Marsh was inducted Friday, February 11th into the Texas Association of Small Schools Bands Hall of Fame during the group’s conference at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio.

Schleicher County Commissioners met Monday, February 7th and heard from attorneys Joe Stephens, Elizabeth Berry and Jason Sosa, representing the Concho Valley Public Defender’s Office.

The County Information Resources Agency board of directors at the Texas Association of Counties announced Monday that Schleicher County Treasurer Jennifer Henderson has joined the board for a three-year term.
